Wisconsin Dells is the self-proclaimed water park capital of the world. And in the world of indoor water parks, it is a large title to fill. Indoor water parks are amusement parks within the confines of a structure, like a hotel resort. Indoor water parks have kid-oriented, play environments with indoor swimming pools and water slides to boot.
They can be described as the Chuck E. Cheese of amusement parks: a contained space with ample areas for entertainment.
There are more than 1,000 water parks in the U.S., with new outdoor and indoor water parks opening yearly. One of the first indoor water parks was built in Edmonton, Alberta: Canada's World Water Park, in 1985. Complete with indoor swimming pools and water slides, World Water Park still houses the largest indoor wave pool in the world, and numerous features such as hot tubs and tube rides. World Water Park measures in at over 225,000 square feet.
As far as indoor water parks go, Wisconsin Dells is the optimal destination. Located in south-central Wisconsin, Dells is seated within four counties, which accounts for its massive amount of space for indoor water parks. The city currently houses 18 indoor water parks and three outdoor water parks, one of which includes the U.S.'s largest: Noah's Ark. The Dells is also the home of the Kalahari indoor water park, which is the U.S.'s largest indoor water park. The first indoor water park to be constructed in the Dells was in 1994; Kalahari was built in May 2000.
The Kalahari water park has a lot of competition in the Dells. However, being housed in the center of a hotel resort has its advantages. Beyond the typical indoor water parks experience of water slides and indoor swimming pools, the Kalahari water park has a countless number of attractions. There are amusement park rides, mini slides, rafting, and water coasters. One of the main attractions is the Flowrider, an indoor swimming pool that creates waves for riders to boogie board and body surf. The fact that Kalahari is also a resort allows for hotel accommodations and amenities such as suites, retail shops, a multiplex theater, and a day spa.
The success of the Kalahari indoor water park in Wisconsin has called for expansion opportunities in other states. Sandusky, Ohio is slated to open a Kalahari water park; Sandusky already hosts the popular outdoor amusement park Cedar Point. The proposed park will be 173, 000 square feet, opening in December of 2007. It is being touted as the Chuck E. Cheese of indoor water parks.
The over 200 water slides in the Dells are a large draw for the estimated five million yearly visitors. Families can enjoy water slides and much more at reasonable year-round prices. Admission prices include full day, adult tickets for $39, while evening ticket prices are $25. Children ages 1 and under are free of charge. Visit Wisconsin Dells and experience any one of its many indoor water parks to enjoy the water experience of a lifetime.
