Indoor karting is a thrilling activity for people who enjoy the sensations associated with fast driving. While extremely popular in Europe, indoor karting locations are popping up all over the U.S. Indoor karting facilities provide relatively safe environments where speed freaks can get their fix. Though the indoor go-karts tend to top out at approximately 30 miles per hour, drivers will perceive that they are traveling much faster as they race. Whether navigating an indoor road-course or oval track, rookie drivers will desire to improve upon their track performance, and they may be inclined to acquire track memberships to do so.

Indoor karting facilities vary in their offerings and prices. They are usually housed along with large entertainment complexes containing video arcades, billiards tables and restaurants. However, the tracks are their main draw. Indoor karting tracks tend to be winding road-courses, however, some facilities feature oval tracks, and some locations feature both. For example, Andretti Indoor Karting & Games located in Roswell, GA, features both types of tracks. Their indoor road-course is reserved for racers whom possess drivers' licenses, while drivers as young as 8 years old may test their skills on the oval. The size and style of track dictates the number of karts permitted to race at the same time.

Newer facilities are equipped to keep track of each driver and kart during a race, measuring racers' lap times and performance relative to others on the track. Computerized measurement of driver performance is actually an indoor karting safety feature. The technology allows race monitors to slow or stop the karts in the event of a problem on the track. Other safety features of indoor karting facilities include helmets, cushioned neck support and the prohibition of alcohol. The vehicles are also equipped to minimize driver injuries.

Indoor go-karts are incredibly sophisticated and powerful machines. They are literally miniature racecars. Two of the most popular indoor go-karts are RIMO Racing Karts and Sodi Karts, both manufactured in Europe. Though individual indoor karting facilities differ on the subject of which is the superior kart, their specifications are quite similar. These indoor go-karts possess 6.5-horsepower engines, hydraulic disc brakes, 5-point racing harnesses and roll bar protection. The RIMO and Sodi racing karts are both equipped with internal clutches, allowing drivers to focus on the track with one foot on the gas and the other on the brakes.

Those planning to do some indoor karting would be wise to phone first before going to a track. Many locations specialize in catering to large groups, and many operate racing leagues on certain dates. Leagues, birthday parties and corporate team-building events are important revenue sources for many track operators, and individual racers may not be able to get any track time during such events. If the track is not booked, individuals will find that indoor karting prices are around $20-$30 per race. However, a reduced rate is usually offered for multi-race packages. Also, track memberships may be purchased for a one-time fee. Members enjoy discounted prices for the duration of their membership, and more often than not, indoor karting facilities commonly honor memberships from other locations.
